FLIPPER in-your-face has never looked so happy.   Pictures of not just one bottlenose dolphin jumping for joy, but images of groups jumping in tandem show that these sea-mammals really are clever.   US photographer, Doug Perrine, 59, took the in-your-face shot of a dolphin leaping when he travelled to the Bahamas.   “Dolphins are highly social animals,” said Doug.   “They may look like they are just having a lot of fun and getting some exercise, but there is usually a lot more going on than meets the eye."   “In some cases leaping may be males showing off their fitness to the females.”   Other dramatic pictures show their South African cousins riding the waves at Wild Coast, and dolphins in the Caribbean leaping in front of a stunning orange sunset.   Bottlenose dolphins are one of nature’s success stories – their overall population numbers are not at risk from human activity and they are found throughout the world’s oceans, including UK waters.   “Many dolphins have learned how to gather enough food in a short time, leaving them with lots of time to socialise and entertain themselves,” said Doug.   “There are many indications that dolphins have what we would call a ‘sense of humour’.   “They may do things for no other apparent reason than that they are fun.   “But it is easy for us to misinterpret behaviour, and mistake aggression for joyful self-expression."
