mother bear

mother bear
This is the moment a mother bear took pity on her unsure cubs who were scared of getting wet in a fast-flowing mountain stream   The grizzly bear's two tiny youngsters stopped in their tracks as mum leapt over the water bolstered by thawing snow.   As she took the distance of the water in a single bound the cubs didn't look half as keen at making the leap.   But like all good mothers the bear returned to her high-and-dry brood and showed them how it was - leaping back and forth to show them how it was done.   Eventually though the whole family had to take the long way round on their route through the Yellowstone National Park, in Wyoming, USA.   The amazing behaviour was caught on camera by American Jerry Mercier, 40, who was in the park studying the wildlife.   He said: "I was driving on the park road south of Mammoth Hot Springs and saw a couple of cars pulled off the road.   "I quickly saw that the people were looking at a grizzly bear and that she had two cubs of that year.   "Meaning the cubs were born just a few months earlier while the mother was in her winter den.   "When I got there it appeared that the sow grizzly wanted the cubs to cross Obsidian Creek.   "She was making all kinds of bear sounds and talking to them, then she'd look at them before jumping across the creek.   "Once on the opposite side she would continue calling them and stood looking their way.   The two cubs were quite vocal as well, making what I would call whining noises.   "Though the cubs had a lot to say, neither of them would get in the water and they weren't big enough to jump the creek as their mum did."   Jerry said the drama on the riverside attracted quite an audience as 20 other cars pulled up to watch the rare glimpse of animal action.   He said: "I couldn't believe my good fortune.   "It was outstanding to be able to watch this wild grizzly bear interact with and attempt to teach her cubs life lessons as I stood and photographed them from the safety of the park road.   "It was a beautiful spring morning and I was surprised by all of the bears vocalization. "They were talking back and forth quite a lot. She calling them to follow her and the cubs refusing loudly. I could almost feel the mother Bear's frustration that her cubs wouldn't do as she asked.   "After about five minutes the sow grizzly crossed back to the cub's side of Obsidian Creek and led them away from the road.   "The bears weren't in any danger. Nothing was threatening them or chasing them or anything.   I don't know if the cubs refusal to get into the water is unusual. It may have been their first time being asked to cross that much water or it may have just been a day where that creek seemed cold, fast, and scary to them.   "Grizzly bear cubs do rely on their mothers to teach them many of the skills required to stay alive and thrive in the first two plus years of their lives."
