Emperor penguins prepare to set off on a long trek across the Antarctic icecap. They are perhaps best known for the tireless journeys that the adult penguins make each year in order to mate and to feed their offspring. These treks can be 50-120 km (31-75 miles) long over treacerous ice to their breeding colonies which may include thousands of individuals Emperor penguins are the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and are the only penguin species that breeds during the harsh Antarctic winter
