PIC FROM WIM VAN DEN HEEVER / CATERS NEWS - (PICTURED: A butterfly on top of a caiman performing tear feeding) -This is the moment a daring butterfly risked being snapped up for dinner when it landed on a caimans eye.The brightly coloured butterfly was spotted calmly resting on the eye of the sharp-toothed caiman in Pantanal in Brazil. But the butterflYs apparent suicide mission was actually more common than you think, as the butterflies drink the tears of animals such as Caimans. This phenomenon is called lachryphagy, which means tear-feeding, and, as cruel as it may sound, it is one of the ways that butterflies can get precious nutrition. Butterflies need salt, or sodium, and other minerals for egg production and metabolism - and a great place to get them is from caiman tears.
