By Dale Maycock This is the incredible moment a hungry group of whale sharks were seen trying to find an easy dinner - by gobbling up a whopping shoal of fish caught by a fisherman. Pictured circling the nets of local fisherman in Cendrawasih Bay, Indonesia, the underwater titans seem to have no problem with helping themselves to a free meal. Taken by Canadian photographer, Mike Veitch, 42, the shameless scroungers are seen hoovering up gallons of water in an attempt to get at the huge fish filled nets. But surprisingly, the local fisherman actively encourage the presence of the whale sharks by feeding them as they believe the mammals bring them good luck. Despite not being a threat to humans, Mike had to carefully navigate his way past the colossal whale sharks as feeding time can soon turn into a frenzy with larger sharks stopping at nothing to get to the free grub. Mike said "The fishermen find the whale sharks to be a good luck charm and therefore enjoy the presence of them means they're in for a good catch. "In many areas fishermen would see whale sharks as a prized catch, however, the Bagan fishermen enjoy the presence of the whale sharks and actually voluntarily feed them small parts of their catch in order to keep them around. "The fish in the nets compress when the fishermen pull up their nets, any that are at the bottom of the nets die from the pressure of the mass of fish above them and are then stuck in the bottom of the net. "There are rules about divers and snorkelers not touching the whale sharks and most people abide by these rules, however, there are no rules that the sharks follow. "Quite a few times I was bumped by a shark from behind as I was filming a shark in front of me. "The larger sharks will often push smaller sharks out of the way to get to food that the fishermen are putting in the water and they have no qualms about nudging divers out of the way either." ENDS
