By Jack Williams A photographer has managed to snap a group of an extremely rare WHITE bears - of which there are believed to be only 500 left in the world. Tom Svensson discovered the elusive Kermode bears in the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia, Canada. Kermode bears - or "Spirit bears" as they are also known - are a subspecies of the North American Black Bear, with only one-in-ten having white or cream-coloured fur. Conservationist photographer Tom, 48, said that many people do not know that there are white bears in the wild other than polar bears, and that he felt extremely privileged to have to seen a group of Kermodes in person. The bears Tom was able to shoot were seen exploring the forest, searching for food, and eating fish, which make up their staple diet. Scientist believe that white bears have more success than black bears when it comes to catching fish, as they are less visible. Male Kermode bears can reach weights of around 500 pounds or more, with females weighing around 300 pounds. When standing straight up, they are around six feet tall. The subspecies are named after Francis Kermode, former director of the Royal British Columbia, who carried out research into the bears. Tom, who is from Sweden, said: "I was really happy to come across these bears and see them in real-life, as they are so rare. "They were actually very nice and calm when I was taking the pictures.People are very surprised to find out that there is more than one species of white bears in the world. "People only think about polar bears, but these bears exist, too." ENDS
