BM_JBwhite_elephants by John Balson LIFE seems a barrel of laughs for this huge white elephant - who appears to be cracking up at its own joke. The seven-tonne giant was spotted by photographer Anja Denker near a watering hole in Etosha National Park, Namibia. The chalk-covered bull was just one of the different 'coloured' elephants she has snapped over the last three years. She said: I love the motion and energy of the photo. Every time I look at it I can still hear the angry trumpeting in my ears and a brief moment of fear - because this happened just a couple of metres from my car. "The greatest compliments I have received are that I manage to capture the emotions of the subjects I photograph." The 45-year-old visual artist also photographed elephants that appear to have green and red stains on their skin. The green colour is caused by algae present in some of the mud which the elephants roll in to keep cool in the scorching heat. The red hue is due to the elephants using the famous red soil of Namibia to clean their skin. Etosha - which means 'place of dry water' - is one of the top safari locations in southern Africa. Its scores of waterholes have a 'magnetic' effect on the wildlife, attracting 150 mammal species including elephants, rhino, springbok and lions - especially during the dry season from June to November.
